Middle School Nurse

Welcome to Anahuac ISD health services. The district employs one registered nurse who oversees the health management of the students and staff, with the assistance of the campus secretaries and principals. The district provides the state mandated screenings such as hearing and vision, scoliosis and acanthosis nigricans. First Aid for minor illnesses and injuries is also available. Once a year the mobile dental unit comes to the school for dental screening and sealants.

This office is also responsible for maintaining current immunization records. The Texas Department of State Health Services requires that immunizations are kept current and records maintained. Your child will receive an alert in the form of a letter to remind you when it is time for boosters. Please obtain the necessary shots as soon as possible to avoid unnecessary absences from school.

Medicines will be given only with written parental consent and if they are to be taken routinely then a doctor’s order is required. Please see the handbook for medication policies. No medicine is furnished at school and must be sent from home.

In order to insure that we have adequate information to properly take care of your child in case of illness or injury please fill out the emergency card and return it to school as soon as possible. We need accurate phone numbers and information about any health problems your child may have or any medications taken at home.

If your child is ill PLEASE do not send him or her to school. If they have a fever or are vomiting they should remain at home until they have been free of fever or had no vomiting for 24 hours. Be sure your child has a good breakfast that is high in protein and low in sugar either before coming to school or at school. Children do not function well and can feel ill if they do not eat. After serving times there are no snacks to available.

Thank you for entrusting your children’s care to us and for your cooperation in making school a safe and happy experience for your child.

Changes in Texas Immunization Requirements

All immunization requirements must be met in order for your child to be enrolled at the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year.

On March 5, 2009, the Executive commissioner on Health & Human Services approved several revisions to the “Immunization Requirements for Children and Students in Texas Public and Private Schools”.

the changes to the requirements were made in order to update the Texas elementary and secondary school immunization requirements so that they adhere more closely to the recommendations of the Centers for Disease control and Prevention (CDC) and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). These changes include:

  • Hepatitis A Vaccine: Beginning August 1, 2009, all students entering kindergarten, statewide will be required to have 2 doses of Hepatitis A vaccine.
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) Vaccine: Beginning August 1, 2009, all students entering kindergarten will be required to have two doses of measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine.
  • Varicella Vaccine: Beginning August 1, 2009, all students entering kindergarten and 7th grade will be required to have 2 doses of varicella vaccine. A written statement from a parent (or legal guardian or managing conservator), school nurse or physician attesting to the child’s positive history of varicella disease (chicken pox), or of varicella immunity, is acceptable in lieu of either dose of varicella vaccine.
  • Tetanus, Diphtheria and acellular pertussis-containing vaccine (Tdap):

Beginning August 1, 2009, all students entering the seventh grade will be required to have one dose of Tdap vaccine. Students in the seventh grade will be required to have a booster dose of Tdap only if it has been five years since their last dose of tetanus-containing vaccine. Students in grades 8-12 are required to have a booster dose of Tdap if it has been ten years since their previous dose of a tetanus-containing vaccine. Td is acceptable in lieu of Tdap if a contraindication to pertussis exists.

Meningococcal Vaccine:  Beginning August 1, 2009, all students entering 7th grade will be required to have one dose of meningococcal vaccine.

All immunization requirements must be met in order for your child to be enrolled at the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year.
